Creating my Profile Picture + experimenting with colour!

Image
After my post on creating a colour palette , I decided to draw a new profile picture that matched the colour scheme. Because it was going to be a pretty important thing, I did a few thumbnails to work out what colours I liked best. I vaguely based it off a photo of me, however didn't actually look at the photo when I was drawing (hence the wonky attempt at drawing the 0.5). Using bright colours that I wouldn't usually use for people was really fun, and something I would like to get a lot better at. I was originally going to only use this as a practice then use digital art to create the final result, but I liked my "practice" so much that I decided to use it as the real thing.  I ended up turning this little practice into a full spread, as I tried using the different shades of blue I had available to draw a person. I've been having a lot of fun with my sketchbook lately, going back to the basics after experiencing some burnout from making my spreads more and more...

Nyx from the Dragon Prince!

Image
"It's 'cause I'm charming, isn't it?" -Nyx I received an ask request on my tumblr  today to draw Nyx from The Dragon Prince. (By the way, feel free to send in TDP or Doctor Who drawing requests there!) She was a very fun character to draw, even though her design does seem a bit like someone's edgy deviantart OC, and I'm really happy with how she turned out! I got the reference from Pinterest here , if you want to try drawing her too!  P.S. On my insta post where I also put this photo, I described her as a "dragon-stealer". This was mainly for alliteration. Obviously  she was just trying to return Zym to his mother out of the goodness of her heart, and definitely wasn't hoping to exchange him for a reward .

Drawing the Twelfth Doctor!

Image
I recently held a poll on  my tumblr  to see which doctor I should draw. The results were pretty interesting by themselves, but the 12th Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, was the clear winner.  The era of the Twelfth Doctor is one of my favourites of Doctor Who, with almost always excellent writing, great characters and storylines. Twelve begins appearing grumpy and standoffish, yet you can see how much he cares as he tries to save people and grapples with the question of "Am I a good man?". His relationship with his first companion, Clara, is so interesting to watch as Clara becomes more and more like the Doctor, and how he is willing to spend 4.2 billion years to save her in Heaven Sent, quite possibly the greatest Doctor Who episode of all time.  Other characters that help to make Twelve's era so great include his second companion, Bill, who constantly asks questions and forces him to reconsider what he takes for granted, while being an incredibly funny dynamic du...

How I made a "bigger-on-the-inside" TARDIS for my sketchbook!

Image
As you might have seen in my first instagram reel , I made a TARDIS for a Tenth Doctor page that folds out to be bigger on the inside, showing the interior from his era. I got this idea from this pinterest tutorial  on how to make a mini aquarium for your sketchbook. For the most part, I followed the instructions, with a few changes.  I made it a vertical rectangle, with similar proportions to the TARDIS. I drew the TARDIS on a seperate piece of paper to stick on the front  Instead of adding fish, I drew the TARDIS interior in the same size as one of the sections, then photocopied it twice so I would have two identical sections.  Some additional notes to make sure it works well: Make sure the TARDIS console lines up with the fold Don't make the exterior too much wider than the actual mechanic, because the extra gets folded over when it is opened When first put in your sketchbook it can be quite thick, but it will flatten a lot over time This was a very fun activity f...

My First Reel!

I'm pretty new to Instagram, but I decided to try my hand at making a reel! After setting up an ~aesthetic~ background with pencils and paints, I flipped through some of my favourite doctor who pages using INCREDIBLY janky transitions. Nevertheless, I am really proud of it!  View this post on Instagram A post shared by Naomi Rose (@naomirosesketches)

Creating A Colour Palette!

I found this awesome website called Coolors - it's an easy way to generate colour palettes that can be used for a bunch of different things! I actually used it to create the colour theme for this blog! I'm definitely going to be saving this for if/when I start doing more digital art! (Click "READ MORE" to see the colour palette I made!)
